Trevon attended conferences in Hangzhou and Nanjing, and got to meet the 'father of metamaterials'
This trip was a long one, including 3 invited talks and conferences and lots of events, including an AI Photonics summer school and meeting the father of metamaterials, Sir John Pendry!
이번 출장은 3건의 초청 강연과 학회, AI 포토닉스 여름학교 참가, 그리고 메타물질의 아버지라 불리는 존 펜드리(Sir John Pendry) 경과의 만남 등 수많은 일정이 포함된 긴 여정이었습니다!
We started at the beautiful international campus of Beihang University in Hangzhou for SPC 2026, where Trevon gave an invited talk, and was the track chair for the T1. Nanophotonics and Nanofabrication session. Thank you to everyone who joined and gave great talks on lots of different topics from biophotonics, to micro and nanoscale fabrication, and even optical skyrmions!
첫 일정은 항저우에 위치한 아름다운 베이항대학교 국제캠퍼스에서 열린 SPC 2026이었습니다. 이곳에서 Trevon은 초청 강연을 진행하고, ‘T1. 나노포토닉스 및 나노공정’ 세션의 트랙 의장(Track Chair)을 맡았습니다. 바이오포토닉스부터 마이크로 및 나노스케일 공정, 그리고 광학 스키르미온(optical skyrmions)에 이르기까지 다양한 주제로 훌륭한 강연을 해주시고 함께해 주신 모든 분들께 감사드립니다!

and for the first time, our lab members were able to join the international conference and AI Photonics summer school at Beihang University… Thank you to all the hard work from Prof Hao Wang, all of the professors, and all of the ‘volunteers’!~

After the events in Hangzhou, we moved onto Nanjing, where we visited Prof Xiong at NJUST and get an invited talk at OICIA2026~
항저우에서의 일정을 마친 후 난징으로 이동하여 NJUST의 웅(Xiong) 교수님 연구실을 방문하고, OICIA2026에서 초청 강연을 진행했습니다~
There were talks from researchers from all around the world, from China, Egypt, Malaysia, Qatar, and the UK, with all kinds of topics related to optics and photonics, including quantum optics and biophotonic applications!
중국, 이집트, 말레이시아, 카타르, 영국 등 전 세계에서 온 연구자들의 강연이 이어졌으며, 양자 광학 및 바이오포토닉 응용 분야를 포함해 광학 및 포토닉스와 관련된 다양한 주제들이 다루어졌습니다!

As always it was a great pleasure to catch up with Prof Qasim Mehmood of ITU~ After meeting many years ago at POSTECH and publishing a number of papers together, his hard work is always inspiring~
언제나 그렇듯 ITU의 카심 메흐무드(Qasim Mehmood) 교수님과 안부를 나누게 되어 정말 반가웠습니다~ 수년 전 포스텍에서 처음 만난 이후 함께 여러 편의 논문을 출판해 왔는데, 교수님의 끊임없는 열정은 언제나 큰 영감을 줍니다~
The final leg of the trip was to give an invited talk at The 17th International Conference on Information Optics and Photonics (CIOP2026)!
이번 출장의 마지막 일정은 제17회 정보 광학 및 포토닉스 국제 학회(CIOP2026)에서 초청 강연을 하는 것이었습니다!
My talk was in the morning of the final day of the conference, so I really appreciated everyone that came to listen! 제 강연은 학회 마지막 날 아침이었는데, 들어주러 와주신 모든 분들께 진심으로 감사드립니다!
It was really amazing to meet researchers from around the world, including new and old friends… especially ones who we haven’t seen for years, or who we have been in contact only online up to now!
오랜 친구들부터 새로운 인연들까지 전 세계의 연구자들을 만날 수 있어 정말 뜻깊었습니다… 특히 몇 년 동안 보지 못했거나 그동안 온라인으로만 연락해 오던 분들을 직접 만나게 되어 더욱 반가웠습니다!
CIOP2026 also held an offline editorial meeting for Advanced Photonics, and Advanced Photonics Nexus, which I have been acting as an early career editor for since the beginning of the year~ It was a great chance to meet the editors and discuss the direction of the journal with researchers and staff…
또한 CIOP2026에서는 제가 올해 초부터 신진 편집위원(Early Career Editor)으로 활동하고 있는 Advanced Photonics 및 Advanced Photonics Nexus 저널의 오프라인 편집위원회 회의도 열렸습니다~ 편집진을 직접 만나 다른 연구자 및 담당자분들과 함께 저널이 나아갈 방향에 대해 논의할 수 있는 뜻깊은 기회였습니다…
I finally got to pick up some Advanced Photonics, Advanced Imaging, and ThorLabs t-shirts!! …It is 1 small dream come true 😂😂
드디어 Advanced Photonics, Advanced Imaging, 그리고 ThorLabs 티셔츠를 얻었습니다!! …소소한 꿈 하나를 이뤘네요 😂😂
However, (sorry to everyone else…but…) the highlight of the trip was getting to spend some time talking to planary speakers of the conference at dinner, including the father of the metamaterials, Sir John Pendry. Based on his insights from over 20 years ago, our research field is still going from strength to strength, while his theoretical work moves onto the time domain!
하지만 (다른 분들께는 죄송하지만…) 이번 출장의 하이라이트는 만찬 자리에서 메타물질의 아버지이신 존 펜드리(Sir John Pendry) 경을 비롯한 학회의 기조 연설자분들과 담소를 나눌 수 있었던 시간이었습니다. 20여 년 전 그분이 제시한 통찰을 바탕으로 우리의 연구 분야는 여전히 눈부시게 발전하고 있으며, 그분의 이론 연구는 이제 시간 영역(time domain)으로 확장되고 있습니다!
One extremely simple but inspiring comment he made when asked about what could happen at the atto second scale: ‘I don’t know, someone needs to do an experiment for us to find out’. Amazing~
아토초(attosecond) 스케일에서 어떤 일이 일어날 수 있는지에 대한 질문을 받으셨을 때, 그분이 남긴 매우 단순하면서도 영감을 주는 한마디: “나도 모릅니다, 누군가 실험을 해봐야 알 수 있겠죠.” 정말 대단합니다~
On another inspiring(?) note, is China one of the only countries in the world where you can go to a single shop in a department store and buy a phone, laptop, toothbrush, air-con, or a CAR… all from the same brand??
또 다른 영감을 주는(?) 이야기인데, 백화점 내 단 하나의 매장에서 스마트폰, 노트북, 칫솔, 에어컨, 심지어 자동차까지… 모두 동일한 브랜드의 제품으로 구매할 수 있는 국가가 전 세계에 중국 말고 또 있을까요??
